Think of the last time you searched the internet for information\u2014did you sift through pages of websites, or did AI place the answer at your feet?\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decades-long reign of Google might just be challenged by this new age of conversational and contextually aware search power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Three Voices on AI Search: Roose, Wong and Stern<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To examine this idea more deeply, this piece will consider three different articles written by Kevin Roose, Matteo Wong and Joanna Stern. As the conversation surrounding AI evolves, their observations offer unique points, from skepticism to adoption, reflecting the considerable development of AI capabilities and increasing adoption by users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By breaking down their findings and looking at the numbers of adoption, I will explore the current and future landscape of AI-powered search. It Has for Me.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As you might have guessed from the title, Roose\u2019s experience was a positive one, but not without some hesitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To test his theory, Roose gave up Google, instead opting for Perplexity, an AI search engine founded by former OpenAI and Meta researchers. Roose\u2019s several-week adoption of Perplexity left him sufficiently convinced AI search engines were a valid competitor against traditional web browsers, but adjustments were needed if they are going to win the race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information retrieval and contextual understanding offered by AI proved more useful for the majority of his work. However, due to AI\u2019s limitations, Google was not obsolete. Acknowledging the absence of credible sources, real-time updates, and the occasional lack of truth AI provided, Roose found his usage of AI had certainly become more prominent, but most successful when used alongside Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article suggests the adoption of AI will not be a bold movement, but a gradual and natural shift in user behavior. Still indecisive on the effects AI will have on journalists, publishers and others who create the internet landscape, Roose stated, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll have to weigh the convenience of using Perplexity against the worry that, by using it, I\u2019m contributing to my own doom.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Matteo Wong: Exploratory Search<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roose is far from the only one to have concerns about the growing popularity of AI. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic&#8217;s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Matteo Wong placed a heavy critique on AI in his article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2024\/11\/ai-search-engines-curiosity\/680594\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Death of Search.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wong\u2019s piece focused less on the way in which a person uses AI and more on the way that AI changes our relationship with information.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83045\" style=\"width: 1536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-83045 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-image-apr-8-2025-at-02-16-55-pm.jpg\" alt=\"AI Search\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-image-apr-8-2025-at-02-16-55-pm.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-image-apr-8-2025-at-02-16-55-pm-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-image-apr-8-2025-at-02-16-55-pm-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/chatgpt-image-apr-8-2025-at-02-16-55-pm-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Should you cross traditional Internet Search off the list? Stern&#8217;s answer is a resounding YES ! &#8211; image generated with ChatGPT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his view, the concern is not AI&#8217;s credibility or factuality\u2014those issues could be fixed as systems evolve\u2014but the loss of an exploratory model of search. When people stop engaging critically with information, they lose the ability to evaluate and explore their own curiosity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He states, \u201cIt could completely reorient our relationship to knowledge, prioritizing rapid, detailed, abridged answers over a deep understanding and the consideration of varied sources and viewpoints.\u201d The indication of Wong\u2019s argument is that by extinguishing that exploratory model of search and making information \u201ctoo\u201d accessible, it dismantles the fundamental idea of the web.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Joanna Stern: Embracing Convenience<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In opposition to Wong&#8217;s take on the adoption of AI-powered search engines is Joanna Stern, who shared her full support in her New York Times article, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/personal-tech\/google-search-chatgpt-perplexity-gemini-6ac749d9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI Quit Google for ChatGPT\u2014and I\u2019m Not Going Back.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stern\u2019s piece rings similarly to Roose\u2019s in that once she made the switch, the probability of going back was unlikely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-83015 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-27-1024x569-1-500x278.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-27-1024x569-1-500x278.png 500w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-27-1024x569-1-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/image-27-1024x569-1.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying a variety of AI platforms, Stern found the ease and refinement of AI a refreshing break from sponsored links and promoted products offered by Google. Only in searching for a known product, website or article did Google still prove useful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she noted AI is consistent with the limitations of poor sourcing and inaccurate information, Stern&#8217;s main concern was the loss of visibility and traffic for the information&#8217;s original source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s to keep AI from making these websites and publications obsolete, and who do you credit for the information you got? Stern wraps her argument into a neat bow by saying, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, yes, I\u2019ll encourage you to try AI for search, as long as you promise to click a link when you can.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>My Experience with AI Search<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I have familiarized myself with the platforms ChatGPT and Perplexity, my experience with AI-powered search engines is still limited. However, from what I have seen, I am impressed. The concise, summarized answers leave me satisfied and often without lingering questions. Still, despite the efficiency, I have found I do not stray far from Google. I am not sure if it is a habit or precaution. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Looking to the Future<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So where do you stand? Are you ready to commit to AI, or is apprehension holding you back? As each article shows us, the level of adoption is varying, and chances are you\u2019re somewhere in the middle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there&#8217;s no doubt the way we access and receive information is changing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/forecasts\/1474143\/global-ai-market-size\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worldwide market size of AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jumped from approximately $50 billion to $184 billion in just one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-83017 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/statistic-id1454204-us-adults-using-generative-ai-usage-first-for-online-search-2023-2027.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"743\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/statistic-id1454204-us-adults-using-generative-ai-usage-first-for-online-search-2023-2027.png 1000w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/statistic-id1454204-us-adults-using-generative-ai-usage-first-for-online-search-2023-2027-404x300.png 404w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/statistic-id1454204-us-adults-using-generative-ai-usage-first-for-online-search-2023-2027-768x571.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a survey by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1454204\/united-states-generative-ai-primary-usage-online-search\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us the number of adults in the United States using AI first for their online search was around 13 million just two years ago and is projected to reach 90 million by 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growth is telling, and it&#8217;s not limited to one platform. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude\u2014even Google is trying to reinvent itself with Gemini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So whether you&#8217;re a curious newcomer, cautious observer or full-on convert, it\u2019s clear we are stepping into a new age of internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward we will have to decide if the gains outweigh the losses and with continual adoption, new questions arise. Will AI search enhance or limit access to diverse perspectives? How much of a role will it play in our daily lives?
