The Cyber threat landscape in Europe is quite worrying. A recent survey by Cloudflare was conducted amongst 4,261 IT executives responsible for cybersecurity in Europe. 24% of the sample is made from small enterprises (150\u2013999 employees), 24% from medium-sized businesses (1,000\u20132,500 employees) and 52% from large organisations (above 2,500 employees). All major European countries were surveyed by Cloudflare in their study entitled Shielding the future: Europe’s cyber threat landscape<\/strong>. The report paints a rather bleak picture but stresses that solutions exist… as long as leadership teams understand what new Cyber threat countermeasures like Zero Trust<\/a> are about. All in all, this will require all management teams, not just IT, to better understand the ins and outs of such dangers.<\/em><\/p>\n

The sample of this survey is quite comprehensive given its high profile and B2B orientation.<\/p>\n

Some of the takeaways from this report on the European Cyber threat landscape include:<\/h4>\n

\u2013 All kinds of businesses are impacted by cyber threats with 72% of respondents reporting at least one incident<\/strong> in the last 24 months,
\n\u2013 84% of respondents reported more incidents compared to past years. With a staggering 43% of those organisations experiencing 10 or more attacks<\/strong> in the past 12 months,
\n\u2013 Attackers are resorting to a variety of methods, with phishing and Web attacks <\/strong>on top of the list,
\n\u2013 A remarkable low number of respondents<\/strong> (29%) state that they are well prepared<\/strong> for future incidents, therefore leaving 71% out of that picture<\/strong>,
\n\u2013 Over half of respondents<\/strong> anticipate that their organisation will dedicate more IT budget<\/strong> to cybersecurity<\/strong>,
\n\u2013 There is a growing concern<\/strong> that “adding numerous point solutions is not the answer<\/strong>“. With nearly half of respondents ranking “simplifying and consolidating their cybersecurity stack” as one of their top three priorities,
\n\u2013 Moving to zero trust security could help<\/strong> but 86% of respondents<\/strong> reported that their leadership teams<\/strong> do not yet fully understand<\/strong> this model.<\/p>\n

Let’s face the music, How many IT execs are feeling comfortable with the understanding of how our complex online systems should be protected? Well, not that many. However much I hate the idea, it seems that too much openness of such systems isn’t making our lives easier.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It seems that an increasingly dangerous cybersecurity landscape is causing more and more aggravation within organisations. The growing complexity of open networks with access to increasing amounts of money is too big a temptation for most cybercrooks to resist. Besides, the staggering complexity of IT, networking and especially cybersecurity solutions such as zero trust explain why there are so few companies that are ready to implement such solutions. However much sense they may make.<\/p>\n

However much I hate the idea, it seems that too much openness of such systems isn’t making our lives easier.<\/p>\n
