This concept was in fact created by the much regretted Mark Weiser from Xerox PARC in the 1970s (see a reprint of the founding article, <a href=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/Weiser-SciAm.pdf\">The Computer for the 21st century<\/a>). It was really visionary.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The computer of the 22nd century?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51525\" style=\"width: 1201px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/oryl\/2445082813\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51525 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/04\/2445082813_1ce5d7bd51_o-e1584257103368.jpg\" alt=\"UMPC Shift by HTC (photo M Oryl) - ubiquitous computing\" width=\"1201\" height=\"1160\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The UMPC Shift by HTC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/oryl\/2445082813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photo M Oryl<\/a>) is paving the way for ubiquitous computing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many would sneer at the concept but look at it: Tablet PCs have already been on the market for at least 4 or 5 years. They haven&#8217;t been hugely successful but the concept is still evolving.<\/p>\n<p>PDAs are now in their prime and evolving to become<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Smartphones and<\/li>\n<li>Ultramobile PCs such as the amazing HTC advantage which was released in April 2007 with a brand new flash-memory disk and a Windows mobile OS which enables to turn the machine on and off instantly (still too expensive though at \u20ac1000 per unit) or even<\/li>\n<li>The astounding &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techeblog.com\/video-polymer-visions-cellular-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cellular book<\/a>&#8216; by Polymer Vision.<\/li>\n<li>I will also recommend an article found on Time magazine describing Paul Allen&#8217;s latest UMPC initiative called Flipstart: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,1604866,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Billionaire&#8217;s Bet, the minicomputers war<\/a>. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>All these initiatives are in a way derived from Weiser&#8217;s vision of the ubiquitous computer, some thirty years ago.<\/p>\n<h3>Ubiquitous computing \u2026 any time soon<\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, none of them has really clinched it yet for us to throw away our clunky laptops and be able to connect and work and entertain ourselves freely, on the move, at a reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p>But there is that sense though that we are getting there soon and that we will soon get a computer for the 22nd century at a reasonable price.<\/p>\n<p>Click the following link to access Mark Weiser\u2019s groundbreaking article in Scientific American.
