As a matter of fact, data mining isn\u2019t new &#8211; I first heard about it in the 1990s when it started to become fashionable, namely in the Banking industry &#8211; and it is not directed at \u201cnew data\u201d but \u201cexisting data\u201d as is described in the infographic.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The path to Big Data: Challenges and Opportunities<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-58672\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/big-data-infographic.jpg\" alt=\"Infographic: The path to Big Data - Challenges and Opportunities\" width=\"526\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/big-data-infographic.jpg 526w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/big-data-infographic-464x300.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If data mining (or even <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Big data\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">Big data<\/a> for that matter) per se isn\u2019t innovative, massive open databases, and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Unstructured data\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unstructured_data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">unstructured data<\/a> like those gathered by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Faceboo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> and <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"homepage noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a> actually are the new kids on the block. NJIT even heralds these new giants as the future major players of the data mining industry. To an extent they already are.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And true enough, data mining is bound to become, at last, a major player in the Marketing field for the years to come: when it comes to clients \u2026 and prospective customers alike (that\u2019s the real novel aspect of it, we can now gather information about clients to be).<\/p>\n<h2>Challenges related to big data implementation<\/h2>\n<p>Yet, many challenges will have to be overcome by businesses which want to benefit from this new wave of market research brought by the big data era:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>improving <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Data quality\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_quality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">data quality<\/a> is one (this is why the retail industry is ahead of the game: check-out data is massive and squeakily clean),<\/li>\n<li>allowing time and resources is another,<\/li>\n<li>not to mention knowledge and training<\/li>\n<li>and, last but not least, internal limitations as to how data can be shared across departments.
