As I was in San Francisco today, I managed to squeeze into a meeting with some of my former partners of the IT press tour. Today we visited <strong>Engine Yard<\/strong>, a new player at the forefront of the implementation of platforms as a service (PaaS, i.e. the infrastructure side of cloud computing) for start-ups and Fortune 500 companies. <strong>Engine Yard\u2019s CEO, John Dillon<\/strong>), shared his thoughts with us on the future of cloud computing with a panel of international journalists. In a few words, he is not impressed with this idea of clouds becoming private.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Engine Yard&#8217;s Dillon: A private cloud is an oxymoron<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_57927\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57927\" style=\"width: 519px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dillon-two.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-57927 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dillon-two-e1602737025253.jpg\" alt=\"Engine Yard cloud computing private cloud\" width=\"519\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dillon-two-e1602737025253.jpg 519w, https:\/\/visionarymarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/dillon-two-e1602737025253-458x300.jpg 458w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-57927\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engine Yard&#8217;s Dillon: A private cloud is an oxymoron<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>\u201cThe most important change in IT since the invention of the PC!\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>John Dillon started his visionary presentation with a very straightforward statement: <strong>\u201cCloud\u2019s the most important change to the way we do computing since the invention of the PC\u201d <\/strong>which address the points made by many of the detractors of cloud technology in the past few years.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cAll revolutions in IT start with listening to the user and what works is what starts small, in a trial and error sort of way, and then deciding what <em>really <\/em>works\u201d he went on. \u201cThe cloud is scary is disruptive\u201d he said but \u201cit has the possibility to change the landscape for ever, and we are part of that change\u201d<br \/>\nDescribing himself lucky, Dillon said they had built a marketplace for the cloud and that they have two kinds of customers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>on the one hand, 2.0 start-ups who are looking to be the next <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>. Dillon went on saying Engine Yard has 2,500 customers in 58 countries although they barely leave San Francisco. They can help our clients with technology, but not with their business models.<\/li>\n<li>Engine Yard\u2019s other clients are Fortune 500 customers but it\u2019s not about core IT, it\u2019s about experimentation and innovation: and it\u2019s working.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are very early with the cloud\u201d John Dillon added, but \u201cCorp IT is still trying to figure out what it means but most of the innovation is happening at the fringe, with systems that couldn\u2019t be done 5-10 years ago\u201d and \u201cif it doesn\u2019t work you can throw it away because it doesn\u2019t cost much money\u201d he commented. Most business executives who want to innovate turn to IT and that\u2019s because of the cloud. the impact will be profound and substantial.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern that the cloud is following is similar to past successful innovations I have witnessed in the past. \u201cBig IT shops are nervous about the future,\u201d he said provocatively and with passion, \u201cbut the change will come and we\u2019ll have to be smart and not tear up the current systems that work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>CIOs beware, \u201cthe tsunami is coming\u201d he even added. Not surprising they are reluctant to jump on the bandwagon \u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Evolution or revolution<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It is often asked whether cloud computing is an evolution or a revolution. Dillon\u2019s answer is loud and clear: <strong>\u201cIf it\u2019s evolution and it\u2019s very fast, sometimes it means that things get broken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The consumerisation of the cloud is happening everywhere and some will see it as revolution, others as evolution. Some IT executives are very positive and embrace the change rather than fight it. A whole bunch of customers 1 mile from here are doing very crazy things <em>[by that he meant Silicon Valley start-ups]<\/em> but <strong>\u201cmost of the business done with the cloud will eventually come from big businesses\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>IT departments are not liked<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>But there is one thing anyone who has worked more than one week for a large company knows, and that\u2019s the fact that \u201ceverybody hates the IT department\u201d and Engine Yard\u2019s CEO thinks that this is also the reason behind this (r)evolution: \u201c<strong>users are fed up of asking for new things and IT departments answering either that you can\u2019t have it or that you will have it next year\u201d <\/strong>he added.<\/p>\n<p>To him, a good IT department should say: \u201cwe should do something about it and use the new tools\u201d. \u201c<strong>A powerful IT department is one that is at the service of their users and shift more investment into innovation from 20% to 30% or even more<\/strong>\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>A statement no IT user would disagree with. <strong>a private cloud is an oxymoron<\/strong> But the other problem with cloud computing is the \u201cold sheep in new clothes\u201d syndrome, which we described lately in an interview with a Sugar CRM executive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are building a private cloud, you are just shifting the budget from one department to another and it\u2019s only a way for the IT department to survive\u201d. he bluntly described.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dillon is no IT department hater, he is merely trying to wake them up to innovation. \u201c<strong>We are planning to become a very strong partner of IT departments in large enterprises<\/strong>\u201d he said, \u201cbut they won\u2019t buy anything now, it\u2019s too soon; within 5 years from now, they will!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong> The cloud is a paradigm shift<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhen there\u2019s a paradigm shift, legacy starts denying it, then they try to highjack the idea (stating things like \u2018the cloud is just like it used to look\u2019) and eventually, changes will come\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Some big IT vendors will make the transition, but the sales model familiar to big IT vendors in which you sell very expensive proprietary products, very complex and with add-on prices so high that the salesperson can buy a new BMW will go!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the same thing that Dillon experienced whilst he was working with <strong>Salesforce<\/strong>. \u201c<strong>10 years ago he said, CIOs wouldn\u2019t want to talk to us, now they all do!<\/strong>\u201d Having said that, cloud computing will not solve integration issues, and this is where IT departments will have an important role to play.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As cloud computing technology is booming there is talk of the so-called private cloud.
